Effective Blended Learning : Role of Blended Intelligence

The pandemic has impacted learning the most since the advent of internet and its influence on the way we learn. we have been experimenting with "digital learning" for some time time now. However, we are yet to reach a stage where digital learning or as it is more commonly understood in the current context, digital blended learning has reached a level of efficiency that is as comparable with Face-to-face learning.

So, the question that I have been asking myself as an educator - how do we improve the efficiency or the effectiveness of the digital blended learning?

A parallel field of technology development has been the rise of application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Can we use this tool to enhance the learning experience in the new normal?

As we dive deep into the field of AI/ML, we realize that data (stated or unstated) is what the computer programs use to 'predict' or 'recommend' something across a wide range of consumer applications. Now, is that what we can use for consumers of education services? A few experiments are happening across the globe that is trying to understand how different learning styles across various layers of "thinking skills" can impact the efficiency of learning.

A core realization that I have is - artificial intelligence is a tool which is effective only when it is used to complement Human Intelligence and hence,

Blended Intelligence (BI) = Artificial Intelligence (AI) + Human Intelligence (HI)

The human intelligence that comes from expert trainers must be retained in the learning process to complement the data science led recommendation done through artificial intelligence. The softer elements of learning - emotional impact on the learner, impact of tone and pitch with which a 'concept' or 'learning module' is delivered and so on. There are distinct patterns that each individual demonstrates in their learning journey and the role of the machine is to identify the core learning methods and align them to the specific learner. At the same time, the trainer can bring in the critical inputs to ensure that the methods chosen are in sync with mood, context, etc.

Learning effectiveness is a fascinating domain to deploy AI/ML. If we use learning from other consumer domains and map their applicability to ensure an elegant technology solution with humane approach to learning, we may be able to truly create a Education 4.0 to meet the demands of Industry 4.0. Unless we achieve this, mismatch between the needs of the education and workplace ecosystems will only widen.

I would love to hear any experiments that you may have undertaken in a related area. Kindly critique, raise questions or simply share your point of view in the comments section.

What skills are required to teach?

The first teacher, for most of us, in our lives, is MOTHER. She takes immense care, shows enough patience and compassion and encourages us to learn the basic art of living on this earth. Do we have something to learn here? In case you are planning to grow up to be a teacher (just in case!! Not a favoured option), there as some skills that you need to start picking up. Of course, this has to be supported by some attitude and aptitude. So what are these skills? Some of the easily identifiable skills include that of communication, organizing, inter-personal and critical thinking, among many others. Let us see a few examples of these skills and see how can one develop the same. While adding muscle to your communication skills, the key is to listen enough and practice speaking in front of audience about things that you are most familiar with. Communication, as often said, is directly proportional to the confidence that you have on a topic. I am sure you may have noticed, among f...

Do you aspire to be a teacher?

I met an interesting profile today which has led me to raise this issue here. This young lady in North India actually aspires to be a teacher at a government school. However, after she completed her B.Ed she has not been able to qualify CTET (entrance qualification for teachers seeking govt jobs). She did qualify for the state TET, still she has not got a job as there has been no vacancy. So, what has she been upto? She qualified some state police and works as a constable.....amazing to me! So what does one do when wants to get a job in this country? Shoot in the dark and keep as many option open as possible.....no wonder, we never had trouble selling the MBA dream......Kees option open! CBSE and MoHRD has undertaken initiatives to reform school system.....one of the first things that need to get fixed is the whole concept of career counselling and goal-setting. If I look back at my own career path, I feel I am blessed that I always had clarity of goals that I wanted to achieve......

Future of teaching online

While teaching online for the past few days, I have been watching my young colleague improving dramatically, adapting to the needs of online teaching. This is not one-off; the young generation is much more comfortable being online. There are still challenges of Internet not being reliable; but why do we complain about this? If you use your mobile phone for more than 3 minutes in this country, there will be a call drop invariably (esp. if you are moving.....mobile phones!!). Coming back to where I started, I also came across a newspaper report stating that more and more Indian youngsters today are opting for free online certification courses nowadays. This provides immense hope on future of online learning. Therefore, teachers today need to prepare themselves for teaching an "online generation". It is imperative that teachers have a new skill to be added to their armoury. The other challenge this will pose to teachers is the ability to deal with more diverse set of studen...
