Skill training in the domain of fine arts

As I spent half a day with the music, dance and painting teachers of our school at Dwarka, it was interesting to hear that the perspective of the trainers in these skills are no different from other skill trainers. It all starts with a natural refrain of trainers: "it is difficult to learn ". And when you discuss, you realise everyone is talking about the same thing, across skill domains. One of the fundamental challenges is the attitude of the the learner and a certain sense of "helplessness" on the part of the trainers that a learner is naturally not willing to put in the hard work required to learn a skill - whether it is repairing computers or learning bharatnatyam. However, the trainer fails to understand that their own attitude to such learners need to change. How do we get better teachers?

Being in the domain of education and training, this question haunts you every day. And this is not an isolated phenomenon of one institution, one state, one country........... Having seen some of the teachers/trainers mature during my stay at Career Launcher, I am a firm believer that "Teachers are not born, but are made". And if you have been able to generate interest in the profession, you will be able to create a teacher par excellence. So what are the skills of a good teacher: 1. Knowledge of subject above the level at which the student is expected to complete the course. 2. Ability to explain each concept in at least more than one ways. 3. Getting to know the needs of the students/ learners. 4. Ability to assess students on what they have learnt so far. 5. Willingness to go the extra mile to mentor the student (listen to his problems).
